NymVPN is currently in its alpha phase, and our team is actively working on enhancing the app's quality and efficiency, to make sure that your privacy is safe.
Below is a list of known issues currently affecting NymVPN as of September 2024:
Network Issues
We are currently working on improving our NymVPN network services, but during the NymVPN alpha phase you may encounter the following network issues:
- Slow speeds when using "Fast" mode
Our fast mode is essentially a degraded version of the mixnet. It is a “2-hop version of the mixnet,” bypassing the inner mixnodes but retaining the packet format (Sphinx) and other properties. This leads to certain inefficiencies and, thus, lower performance. You can read more about this in our dedicated help article "Why do I experience slow speeds on NymVPN?"
- "What's my IP Address" services show a different location than the one selected in NymVPN
Each NymVPN server's location is inferred based on its IP address by our IP geolocation system. The actual location may slightly differ from what is displayed in the app, but this is continuously being improved. You can visit our help article on "How is server location determined by NymVPN" to understand more about geolocation and how this works on NymVPN.
- NymVPN is leaking DNS/WebRTC and IPv6 addresses
Being experimental software, NymVPN may still allow online services on your device to communicate outside of the VPN tunnel. This is currently being worked on, in the meantime do not rely on NymVPN for strong anonymity yet. In the meantime, you can favour IPv4 which if more reliably supported than IPv6.
You can read more updates about this change in our dedicated help article "What to do if NymVPN is leaking DNS/WebRTC and IPv6 addresses?"
- When the connection fails, internet traffic goes in clear (no Killswitch)
NymVPN does not have a built-in “kill switch” (a feature blocking all device online traffic in case of a VPN connection failure). When possible, use the built-in OS kill switch, such as the one found on Android devices.
Windows
- When installing NymVPN on a Windows device the error "The code execution cannot proceed because VCRUNTIME140.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem." occurs.
This error typically occurs because a necessary component, the VCRUNTIME140.dll file, is missing from your system.
You can read how to fix this error in our help article "How to fix VCRUNTIME140.dll error after installing NymVPN?"
Linux
- I can’t install the app on GNOME
The team is working on an improved standard Debian package.
iOS
- When adding a credential the error "The operation couldn't be completed" occurs.
Get in touch with the Customer Experience team at Nym, share the invalid credential and ask for a new one.
Android
- NymVPN fails to reconnect after flight mode is toggled or after a phone call.
An update should fix the issue. In the meantime, quit and reopen the app to reconnect.
